The
Institute of Humanities at Kyung Hee University was established
in 1995 in response to the growing demand that studies
in humanities be provided with interdisciplinary, coordinated
and synthetic research programs cutting across departmental
boundaries. Several humanities research centers of the
university were thus integrated into the institute, and
with it, the five extant humanities departments of the
university were given a coordinationg body to overcome
isolation and compartmentalization. The institute has
five branches of research, each devoted to the five major
fields of humanities: language, literature, history, philosophy
and human geography. The institute has a three-fold objective:
to provide a range of resources and methods for working
with the five independent humanities departments of the
university; to develop educational methods and research
programs in the fields of humanities; and to explore ways
to bring the humanities both in the west and in Korea
into a more concrete, productive, and dialogic network.

This
institute, which aims to create a third medicine by creatively
combining Eastern and Western medicine, was established
in 1971 and appointed by the World Health Organization
on 18 April 1988 as one of the Collaborating Centers for
Traditional Medicine. One of the major international symposia
sponsored by the institute was held in 1994 under the
title of the Creation of a Third Medicine through the
Cooperation of Eastern and Western Medicine.?In October
1999, the International Symposium on East-West Medicinet
will be held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Kyung
Hee University. Since 1996, research funds have been provided
by the Korean Government and Korea Research Fund to support
research. The institute also has continued to provide
opportunities to foreign scholars to learn traditional
Oriental medicine.
The
institute was founded on December 30, 1991, to study the
pathophysiology of endocrine disease and develop new diagnostic
and treatment methods for Korean patients in particular.
The Endocrine Research Institute has been doing research
on the pathophysiology of endocrine disease since 1980
along with the Endocrine Laboratory and its members. The
Endocrinology Institute has six departments: Diabetes,
Lipid Metabolism & Obesity, Neuro-endocrinology, Growth
& Aging, Bone Metabolism, Immuno-endocrinology and
more than 20 full-time researchers, making progress with
up-to-date research.
The
Research Institute of Oral Biology was founded to meet
the needs of the public. The function of the institute
is to support inter-departmental research teamwork, design
a new research system, and to plan and conduct institutional
projects, thereby contributing to the development of the
dental science and industry.
The
Institute of Global Environment (IGE) aims to protect
the global environment from various sources of artificial
contamination in order to ensure a naturally balanced
ecosystem amenable to the betterment of human welfare.
The institute conducts research projects on both abiotic
environments (such as water, air and soil) and biotic
environments (such as microorganisms, plants, and animals).
Present research projects include studies on drinking
water quality, indoor air pollution, groundwater contamination,
and soil contamination analysis.
The
Institute of Oriental Medicine was founded on October,
1994 and combined with the Institute of Classical Oriental
Medicine . The goals of the institute include introducing
scientists to the current research related to oriental
medicine and providing a bridge between scientists and
oriental-medicine researchers. Ultimately, the institute
seeks the systematization of the enormous knowledge contained
in Eastern Medicine.
The
East-West Nursing Research Institute was founded in 1996
to explore the possibility of integrating Eastern &
Western Nursing and promoting the public health. The major
activities of the East-West Nursing Research Institute
include 1) performing basic research on East-West Nursing,
2) developing various East-West nursing interventions
in accordance with the client needs, 3) developing the
East-West nursing information system and its related policies,
4) conducting research for the development of East-West
nursing curriculum and educational materials, 5) producing
researchers and supporting their research capacities and
6) hosting international conferences and joint projects.
The institute also publishes the Journal of East-West
Nursing Research and holds an academic symposium every
year.
The
purposes of the institute are to promote research activities
in and outsidethe country, to fund in-depth research geared
toward acting as a cultural bridge role between Korean
contemporary art and art itself and to put field experience
into practice. The institute does so by holding international
exhibitions, art and science seminars, and promoting research
activities on the school grounds.
The
Kohwang Medical Research Institute, established for the
purpose of studying biological phenomena and the causes
of diseases, includes under its name the Laboratory for
Neuroscientific Research and the Laboratory for Research
in Metabolic Disease. It carries out research projects
in the biomedical sciences independently, in cooperation
with other research institutes (both in and outside Korea
), upon request by other research institutes, and internationally.

Center for the Study of Language is a language research
center founded in 1979 (then under the name of Kyung Hee
Language Institute: KLI). Since its conception, the CSL
has devoted itself to the research and development of
linguistic theories. The researchers in the center have
actively engaged in various research programs and played
a leading role in introducing computationally applicable
grammars such as GPSG (Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar)
and HPSG (Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar) into the
Korean linguistic society.
The
East-West Pharmaceutical Research Institute was established
in the College of Pharmacy to develop new drugs by studying
the wealth of knowledge contained in East-West herbal
medicines with Western medical research techniques. To
achieve this aim, the institute consists of a Natural
Product Section, Medicinal Chemistry Section, Toxicology
and Pharmacology Section, Pharmaceutics Section and Clinical
Pharmacy Section.
This
institute is located in the Kyung Hee University Medical
Center . Its purpose is to study the causes and pathophysiology
of renal diseases and to treat patients with renal diseases
through Eastern and Western medical research methods.
It consists of 5 divisions: Glomerular Diseases, Chronic
Renal Failure, Pediatric Nephrology, Oriental Herb Medicine,
and Nutrition for Renal Disease.
The
Research Institute of Clinical Nutrition (RICN) was founded
in 1998 in collaboration with the Kyung Hee Medical Center
. Research activities at the RICN focus on clinical nutrition
and preventive medicine research. The Clinical Nutrition
Center operates to provide medical nutrition therapy to
patients and nutrition education to the public. The RICN
also offers a mixture of clinical and graduate education
for those students wishing to specialize in clinical nutrition

In
2005, another science research center (SRC) with a title
of Acupuncture and Meridian was launched at Kyung Hee
University with the financial support of Korean Ministry
of Science & Technology. The main purpose of the center
is to scientifically identify the functional mechanism
and therapeutic effectiveness of Korean acupuncture therapy
that has already been proven effective clinically in a
long history of Korean traditional medicine.
The goal of AMSRC is to establish conceptual basis for
mechanisms of the therapeutic effect of acupuncture and
meridian phenomena. Our project is aim to elucidate the
neurophysiological mechanism acupuncture on the neurovascular
and neurodegenerative diseases, to map neuronal action
of the acupuncture point and meridian using fMRI and PET,
and to search a novel factor to acupuncture specific gene
and protein. Advances in sophisticated technology utilized
in the fields of neuroscience and molecular biology have
the potential to lead to greater understanding of the
mechanisms underlying the effects of acupuncture.
