Kyung Hee University (KHU) started the project called 'Vision 2000' at the 50th anniversary (1999) to develop KHU's future goal and to prepare for the new Millennium. KHU has the colleges and affiliated hospitals of medicine, Oriental medicine, and dental medicine. KHU chose "Oriental Medicine" as the specialized research area and has made numerous efforts to combine Oriental and Western medicine. Under such circumstances, the Graduate School of East-West Medical Science (GSM) was established. The Korean Ministry of Education nominated GSM as the Brain Korea 21 project in 1999. The ultimate goal of GSM is to create 'New Medicine' based on the knowledge of Oriental medicine and Western medicine.

Degrees offered by GSM are MS and Ph.D in the fields of Oriental medicine, Medicine, Medical science, Medical nutrition.

- Laboratory of Herbal Pharmacology
- Overview
In order to ellucidate the effects of Herbal drugs, scientific evaulation processes are necessary through chemical and pharmacological studies. In this major, we plan to verify the effects of herbal tonics on the neuroprotection and its pharmaceutical mechanism. The suggestions of a basic pharmacological theory of tonics and the developments of new tonics or herbal drugs with preventive effects against neurodegenerative disease are also attempted.
Specific research topics include:
¨ç Standardization of herbal drugs and development of alternative drugs
¨è Development of new formation of traditional Oriental Medical Prescription
¨é Development of new neuroprotective drugs

* Director: Professor Kim, Sun-Yeou, (sunnykim@khu.ac.kr)

- Laboratory of Acupuncture and Meridianology
- Overview
This research aims to identify the mechanism of prescription system and to develop the therapeutic methods involved in acupuncture.
Specific research topics are:
¨ç Study on the mechanism of acupuncture and herbal acupuncture
¨è Development of herbal acupuncture according to the various states of disease
¨é Development of electroacupucture techniques

* Director: Professor Lee, Hye-Jung(missionluv@hanmail.net)

- Laboratory of Neuroscience
- Overview
Though vascular dementia has increased among elderly people in the recent days, unfortunately, ischemic brain injury induced by brain vascular disease is not easily curable mainly because neuronal tissues do not regenerate. The goal of this laboratory is to find the medical ways to minimize a sequellae of cerebral disease.
Specific research topics include:
¨ç Study on the pharmacological effects of herbal medicines on defense mechanism against neuronal injury
¨è Study on pharmacological effects of herbal medicines on brain metabolism and cerebral blood flow
¨é Study on the pharmacological effects of herbal medicines on focal brain ischemia and apoptosis
* URL: http://web.khu.ac.kr/~neuron
* Director: Professor Sohn, Nak Won(sohnnw@khu.ac.kr)

- Laboratory of Oncology
- Overview
Traditional cancer treatments in western medicine-surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, - produce severe side effects. This lab aims to shift research direction to alternative medicine to minimize side effects of cancer treatment and unexpected sequellae. Specific research topics include:
¨ç Study on mechanism of the suppression of tumor-cell
¨è Study on oriental medical treatment for reducing side effects of anti-cancer therapy
¨é Study on oriental therapy for pain control in terminal stage of cancer
* URL: http://web.khu.ac.kr/~oncology
* Director: Professor Kim, Sung-Hoon (sungkim7@khu.ac.kr)

- Laboratory of Medical Nutrition
- Overview
The Laboratory of Medical Nutrition conducts research on nutrition combined with medical science and oriental medicine and excels at translating nutritional discoveries into improved patient care and disease prevention. Also the laboratory offers the Korean Dietitian Association (KDA) approved professional practice program of supervised rotations for clinical dietitian (SRCD). Many researches are currently under way in the area of medical nutrition, molecular nutrition, and applied nutritional science.

Specific research topics include :

¨ç Study on the effects of the active substances in preventing disease
¨è Study on the control of genes related to chronic diseases
¨é Development of nutritional assessment system and the nutrition
programs for patients
¨ê Development of functional foods using active ingredients from the
therapeutic herbs
