Area Studies focuses on the politics,
society, and economy of various regions
and countries from the comparative perspective.
In this sense, Area Studies differs
from cultural or historical approaches
to specific countries. Main questions
raised in Area Studies are why the American
political economy is distinct from others,
how countries react to external shocks,
such as international financial crisis,
what is the domestic base for encouraging
regional/international cooperation,
and so on. Area Studies puts much emphasis
on the study of various institutions
that govern politics and markets in
a given area.
In response to the increasing needs
for understanding and learning about
other countries and regions in the age
of globalization, the Area Studies major
was established in 1988 as one of the
new fields at Kyung Hee University.
As the university system was transformed
into a faculty system, it was integrated,
along with its sister field of International
Relations, into the School of Management
and International Relations in 1999.
The Major in Area Studies currently
consists of four areas: the United States,
Japan, China and Latin America. Together
with extensive language education for
the areas concerned, the major offers
students a variety of courses: Foreign
Relations, Politics, Economics, Society
and the History of the Four Regions
and some courses in the field of international
relations. Those who have foreign language
capability and foreign residence experience
are very welcomed

Global
Studies is a new field whose objective
is to produce capable international
leaders who can be successful in this
age of globalization. While the field
of Global Studies has long been established
as one of the most important majors
in American universities, it was only
in the early 1990s, when political,
business, and academic circles began
to talk about globalization, that it
was first introduced to Korea.
